This all started on March 11, 2001. That was the day I decided to start keeping track of all the movies I watched. This was probably a little weird, but I was frustrated with not being able to remember which movies I saw, or how many of them. Over the last 9+ years, I have faithfully maintained this count and my focus on watching movies. On March 11, 2011, I will celebrate my 10 Year Anniversary. Today happens to be December 1st, which means I have exactly 100 days until March 11th. In one of those strange twists of fate, today, 100 days until my 10 year mark, I've managed to watch 1,900 different movies.
My goal is to hit my 2,000th movie on my 10th year of tracking the movies I watch. That means I need to see 100 movies in the next 100 days. Now, I love movies, but this is a little crazy, even for me. I have decided to blog this attempt for a number of reasons. Primarily, though, I'd like to use this opportunity to facilitate some conversations about movies. That's one of the great things about movies, and one of the reasons I love them so much- they are endlessly debatable. Is this movie better than that movie? Was that a good movie or a horrible one? What is the greatest action movie of all time? The greatest horror movie? The greatest comedy? The opinions and possibilities are endless. Also, no matter how many movies you've seen, there's always an embarrassing amount of good movies that you haven't yet had a chance to see. I want to use the next 100 days to share my love of movies, and to hear about which ones you love, too.
I know everyone is very busy, and all those status updates aren't going to check themselves. However, if you love movies like I do, I hope you'll check back here now and again. Maybe you'll agree with my statements- maybe you'll violently disagree. All the same, I'm fascinated by different opinions, and want to hear yours. Maybe I'll recommend a movie you haven't seen, and maybe it'll make an impact on you like it made on me. I'd certainly love to hear your favorite movies.
It seems like 2010 was a tough year for many people. The economy still sucks, we had the worse oil spill in U.S. history, movies have been down this year, LeBron James ruined the NBA, and there still aren't moving sidewalks. Maybe this whole idea is a stupid thing to do. However, movies have always been important to me- the stories and the struggles of others have always inspired me to do better and to keep going through tough times. Maybe we need movies now more than we have in the past. Maybe it's like Steve Martin says in Grand Canyon- "That's part of your problem- you haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies."
I don't have any answers. What I do know is that movies have shaped and changed my life. Movies have inspired me and helped make me the person I am today. I have 100 days to do something crazy, like watch 100 movies, and I'm going to give it my all. I hope you'll stop by on this journey with me. Maybe it will inspire you to check out a film you haven't seen before. Maybe it'll inspire you to look differently at movies in general. Maybe you'll come to the conclusion that I have terrible taste in movies. I don't know- but I'm looking forward to it.
Sounds like a fun, interesting and somewhat crazy adventure you're about to embark on Tim! What's first on the list??
ReplyDeleteLove this idea and miss our old days of movie reviewing!
ReplyDeleteVal- thanks! We really did a good job with those reviews. I still remember professors on campus telling me that was their favorite part of the entire paper!
